The unit is supplied with a default operating system which supports seamless use of all types of cards, removing the need for the host device (if any) to discriminate between the various card types. An ASCII interface mode option allows for simplicity of programming and operation. Card read/write keys may be stored permanently in non-volatile memory or supplied on an ad-hoc basis. It is also possible to have the unit supplied with bespoke firmware to enable it to perform specific tasks on a stand-alone basis. In many cases, this removes the requirement for a PC, making the resultant system more cost effective, stable and secure.
